Not for the faint-hearted.

The farm roads and sometimes single-track mountain paths set this race apart from your average road run. No wonder we’re known as, “The toughest race with the warmest heart.”

What makes this race different?

The Landscape

You’ll run through farmland and Fynbos, over mountains (and sometimes through streams) and on tar roads. This is a road race – but don’t discount the trail running elements. It makes the Voet van Afrika Marathon truly unique.

The People

You’ll connect with runners from near and far, and with thousands of cheering supporters. The Overberg truly opens her arms to welcome you, with the Bredasdorp and Napier communities leading the hospitality charge.

The Organisation

The marathon and half marathon have been rated some of the best organised events in South Africa. And every year, we get EVEN BETTER. Come and see for yourself.

The Voet van Afrika Marathon returns to Bredasdorp on 20 September 2025, offering a range of road and trail races for all fitness levels. Online entries will open at a later date—keep an eye on the official website and social media pages for updates.

Marathon - 42.2km

The marathon takes you over the Overberg mountains, past breathtaking lookout points, through colourful farmland, and into the towns of Napier and Bredasdorp. It’s tough – but spectacular. (The new route was launched in 2016, and closely resembles the original route dating back to 1978).

Half Marathon - 21.1km

The route will take you for 4km on gravel road at the outskirts of Napier with fresh country air and fynbos. Joining the 42.2km athletes for the last stretch from Napier on tar road. This route also offers ample opportunity for support and waterpoints along the route. Dating back to 2004, we believe that this route will not only bring back fond memories for some but also create new, cherished experiences for all athletes.

10km

Like the half marathon, the 10km is a fairly demanding race. Be prepared for a few tough climbs – both at the start and the finish. From Bredasdorp, you head into the surrounding farmland and Fynbos. The circular route joins the marathon routes with about 2kms to go to the finish.

Trail Run | 27.5km & 13.5km

If you are an experienced trail runner then this new trail routes with beautiful fynbos and spectacular views is an absolute must run.
